How Did Simply You Nutrition Begin?
Well, it's interesting. The beginnings of Simply You Nutrition come from a farsighted desire to own my own practice, but I was not actively pursuing the desire until recently. I was, of course, gleaning information and wisdom here and there from respected nutrition professionals and various life experiences along the way, but I just wasn't seeking it out.
Then, one day in the not-so-distant-past, my employer and I found ourselves at an impasse. Now, Merriam-Webster defines impasse as "a predicament affording no obvious escape" or a "deadlock". I, however, am using the term to more specifically describe "an immediate position elimination brought about by company downsizing". While I did not have a vote in the matter, I am honestly grateful for this opportunity I've been given. It was, after all, through this "impasse" my business was born.
For the longest time I was too afraid/logical/practical to step out of my comfort zone and pursue this desire. Sometimes, though, when we don't exercise our faith to step out where we're called, I believe God gives us some "encouragement" to do so. What immediately came to mind after I processed what I was being told about the position elimination was Romans 8:28 (NKJV): "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." So, instead of hanging my head and wallowing in self-pity, I pulled up my bootstraps and set forth on the path to private practice!
At this point, I employed what Peter Pan referred to as faith, trust, and pixie dust! My husband and I prayed together and asked for God's wisdom and direction regarding this new business endeavor. I chose to trust God with this change in my life, because if I tried to take control I would have freaked plumb out! I began applying the "pixie dust" by doing all of the research I could on starting up a private practice and consulting with trusted professionals in my community (I would like to give a special shout-out to my husband for helping me with all of the behind-the-scenes work to get my website up-and-running, my mom for being the accounting and tax aficionado that she is, and my sister, owner of Bayley Jackson Photography, for graciously offering to help me with my logo, conceptual design, photos, and branding), and here we are!
Poof! That easy, right? Not exactly. (Please note along the way I did have an approximately 36-hour period where I was in what my mom lovingly refers to as the "Six Days Seven Nights oh s***, we're gonna die!" phase. I am grateful for my support system and the tools I have in my toolbox to manage my emotions - having your position eliminated isn't fun or easy!) Starting a business demands an inordinate amount of hard work and a considerable investment of resources, but for me, it's worth it! I look forward to working with my community to bring awareness and healing to those struggling with their relationships with food and their bodies. Here's to the journey!
